December 2014 will be my 20th graduation anniversary. I can’t believe that I’ve been an OT for almost 20 years…
I WAS an OT for a long time, it took a huge chunck of my life, I put tones of energy into it, to make it grow in Bs As, to develop knowledge and to promote the profession. It was like a crusade to show the world how important OT was and how much OT can contribute to people’s health… It was exciting to innovate in areaswhere there was no history of OT. My colleagues were a great source of fun; love and hate… so much gossip and troubles because with some colleagues we were doing new things… The more criticism we received the stronger we felt to keep fighting and producing hard evidence of the effectiveness of our work. My whole life revolved around OT for many years…
I felt important, strong. I felt special by being able to deal with complexity and sadness. It was rewarding to elaborate and produce stuff out of my daily work, to be recognised! OT filled my days.
I’m extremely grateful with this profession because put me in touch with other people’s suffering; waked me up from the dream of inmortality and made me review my own life feeling compelled to do something about it; felt responsible for building my own happiness. That’s how I landed in therapy… something like 4-5 years of Gestalt!! Dragging some of my friends to Gestalt after me!!!
That was a great gift.
I also met amazing people, so clever and energetic to help other people with health issues to be better, to find a better way of living with whatever they were suffering from.
Once more, this feeling, or for a better word the place OT has in me has changed… I felt I “WAS an OT”; now I just work as OT. I don’t get the urge to show the world the wonders of OT, I don’t mind when people don’t know or don’t understand what OTs do anymore! It’s like I contributed for a while to the big OT body and now I enjoy cruising along …
I have stopped identifying myself with I what I do for a living. From my work I really enjoy the contact with people, listening to people who for different reasons are unwell, provinding some help, solving some problems…
I feel closer to being a carer; I know I’m good at keeping company, looking after/caring for someone, I’m patient and I have 20 years experience in doing things to get sick people to get better, even helping to die well… if that makes sense to you…
Last year I had a dream: I was watching a lady I used to work with holding someone on her arms and caressing his head in a beautiful and compassionate way. As I was watching I said to myself: “That’s what I want to do, look after people who are unwell, sick or dying”.
I’ve also been looking at carer’s job ads, is not well paid… So I though… I can be my own business; offering “quality company” or “holistic care in your own home” … For the advertising: “Give your elders the gretest gift of quality company and help, hire me!!!” hahaha!!! I look forward to hearing ideas and suggestions for my soon to come business!! Because I can only see it as wishful thinking so far…

TO
Me sentia importante, fuerte. TO llenaba mis dias.
